Fifth National Climate Assessment | Chapter 32 | Mitigation

Mitigation refers to efforts to reduce emissions or to remove carbon from the atmosphere with the goal of avoiding or reducing the effects of climate change, which is different from adapting systems and activities to a changed climate (Ch. 31). To meet international climate goals, global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions would need to reach net zero by around 2050 (KM 32.1).
