Explore PSEG’s Salt Marsh Restoration Project

May 14, 2025 | 11:00 am - 4:00 pm | PSEG Energy & Environmental Resource Center
$25 – $45

Tidal wetlands are one of the most productive ecosystems on earth. They perform valuable functions: filtering impurities from storm water runoff, minimizing the damage of storm surges, providing shelter and food for migrating birds and serving as spawning and breeding grounds for fish and wildlife – in essence, they serve as the base of the food web.

In an effort of unprecedented scale, PSEG began working in 1994 to restore and preserve portions of the Delaware Estuary in both New Jersey and Delaware. Since then, we have restored, enhanced and/or preserved more than 20,000 acres of salt marsh and adjacent uplands to vital, healthy habitat for fish and wildlife.

This has been a true public/private partnership with independent scientists, environmental groups, natural resource and land management agencies, public officials and local communities. With many sites now completely restored, this Estuary Enhancement Program is a success story based on a relentless application of sound scientific principles.

Sunglasses, sturdy shoes/hiking boots and sunscreen recommended.  Registration closes Monday at 5 pm.

Tour the Salem Estuary Enhancement Program

Location: PSEG Energy & Environmental Resource Center, 244 Chestnut St., Salem, NJ 08079

Schedule:

11:30 AM — Lunch and Introduction

12:30 PM — Depart for On-Site Tour (carpooling to two locations)

~4:00 PM — Return to PSEG Energy & Environmental Resource Center

Join fellow scientists, engineers, water resource managers, and environmental leaders for a rare, in-depth tour of the Salem Estuary Enhancement Program (EEP).

Launched in 1994 to meet New Jersey Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NJPDES) requirements, the EEP has restored, enhanced, and preserved over 20,000 acres of salt marsh and upland habitat along the Delaware Estuary. It is a model of how science, industry, and community collaboration can drive large-scale, lasting environmental restoration.

Tour Highlights:

  • Restoration of Tidal Marshes: See firsthand how invasive species management and removal of remnant dikes have revitalized marshlands for fish access, vegetation regrowth, and estuarine health.
  • Phragmites Management Strategies: Learn about pioneering efforts to control invasive species and promote the resurgence of native marsh grasses critical to habitat quality and biodiversity.
  • Comprehensive Monitoring Programs: Gain insights into this large scale biological monitoring effort, designed to track ecological improvements and inform adaptive management in the Delaware Estuary.
  • Public Access and Education Initiatives: Explore how the EEP has created new opportunities for recreation, research, and environmental education through restored natural areas.

This is a unique opportunity to experience the intersection of ecological restoration, fisheries enhancement, and infrastructure compliance, and to gain insights into strategies applicable to other water resource challenges.
