YOUNG LEADERS AWARD Presented to

Abdullah Al-Amin, PhD
Philadelphia Water Department

For rigorous and pioneering stormwater science, engaging collaboration, and the rare gift of making complex ideas clear in service of clean water across the Delaware River Basin.

Abdullah Al-Amin, PhD

Abdullah Al-Amin is an Environmental Engineer with the Philadelphia Water Department’s Development Services Unit whose research and professional work help cities use green infrastructure to reduce pollution and protect rivers and streams. He earned his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Temple University, where his research focused on the fate and transport of inorganic ions in stormwater management practices.

Abdullah was a great contributor to the stormwater management project and to the McKenzie Environmental Engineering Research Group. His proactivity was a huge asset to accomplishing the field work, which included a wide range of sample types and in situ monitoring.

Additionally, Abdullah was the brave soul that independently took on learning and executing Bayesian data analysis approach, where this was the first time that anyone in my group had employed this. Last but not least, Abdullah is a networking extraordinaire and it was always fun to see him interact with the broader community.

Notably, his monitoring efforts showed that green infrastructure can capture salt from road runoff and highlighted the need for future solutions to immobilize salt within these systems. He holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in environmental sciences and has extensive experience in laboratory experimentation, field monitoring, sensor data analysis, and statistical modeling.

Abdullah has authored multiple peer-reviewed journal articles and technical reports and has presented his work at national and regional conferences, including the Society of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology North America (SETAC), the Hudson-Delaware Regional Chapter of SETAC (HDC-SETAC), the Villanova University Stormwater Partnership (VUSP), and the American Chemical Society Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting.

Throughout his academic and professional career, Abdullah has demonstrated a strong commitment to leadership, organizing various social and humanitarian activities. He is a founding member of the Temple University College of Engineering Graduate Student Association, a former student representative and a current board member of the HDC-SETAC, and an active Young Leader with the Water Resources Association of the Delaware River Basin. He brings deep fluency in water science to every room he enters, translating complex technical work into clear, compelling terms for scientists, practitioners, and regulators alike, making him a trusted colleague across disciplines.
