John L. Buzzi Memorial Scholarship Fund
Background
In 2003, the Water Resources Association of the Delaware River Basin (WRA) established the John L Buzzi Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor the late Dr. John L. Buzzi (1936-2003), a former chairman of WRA and member of the Board of Directors who was a water resource engineering professional and a dedicated community leader within and outside the Delaware River Basin. WRA is pleased to announce the availability of $1,000 in scholarship funds for the purpose of educating an aspiring water resources student.
Eligibility
The applicant (1) must be accepted at a properly accredited junior college, college or university for the fall semester of 2008 within the states of Delaware, New Jersey, New York or Pennsylvania and (2) must have an interest in issues related to water resources. The applicant must be a high school senior, preferably residing within the Delaware River Basin watershed.
Selection Criteria
The scholarship will be awarded to a student qualified by academic performance, who exhibits an interest in a water resource issue(s) and is involved in the community. Measures of academic performance include a respectable cumulative grade average for grades ten through twelve and a statement of career goals. Job history or volunteer information related to a water resources or environmental field will also be considered. Measures of community involvement include participation in activities that are of benefit to the community at-large.
Application Process
Applicants should prepare a typed title page with applicable contact information as given below and a summary of their academic interests and achievements, job and volunteer history, extracurricular and community activities, and career goals as they relate to the above selection criteria. Summaries are limited to two pages. The application should include two letters of reference (they can be generic but preferably from teachers, community leaders, mentors and/or counselors), a transcript with grades for all courses taken within the last three years, and the applicants full name, permanent mailing address, e-mail address, and a phone number at which he/she may be easily reached. Application materials become the property of WRA.
Deadline
All applications and supportive materials must be received by WRA at the address below no later than MARCH 31, 2008. The WRA Scholarship Awards Committee will select scholarship recipients in April, of 2008. The decision of the Committee is final.

WRA Award Nominations
Guidelines
Award nominations are solicited on a yearly basis and are given out
in our Annual Recognition Dinner held each year in April. All worthy
nominations will be considered. The guidelines for such nominations
are provided below.
ELIGIBILITY
- Projects or individual contributions developed during the past
five years.
- Projects or concepts, the design, construction, and/or implementation
of which represent a substantial contribution to sound water resources
management.
- Projects or concepts, the design, construction, and/or implementation
of which represent:
- a savings in terms of dollars
- conservation
- promotion of health and safety
- impact on water supplies
- purification
- wastewater, and/or
- jobs
- The project or concept must have had an impact on a community or
region, the members of an industry, or an organization.
- The project or concept should represent an advancement of knowledge
or the application of sound principles of good water management.
- An individual whose services have contributed to sound water management.
APPLICATIONS
will be accepted in the following categories:
- Samuel S. Baxter Memorial Award -
given to the candidate who best exemplifies the purposes of the WRA
as evidenced by the contribution to sound water management that was
the keystone of Philadelphia’s former Water Commissioner.
- Business and Industry Award - open
to all who work and do business within the our-state Basin region,
and who have demonstrated leadership in sound water management.
- Government Award - given to a governmental
body or individual who has contributed to sound water management.
- WRA Achievement Award - for a member or member organization whose services have advanced the cause of sound water resources management.
- Special Recognition Award - open
to all individuals or organizations offering special input or guidance
to water management projects during the past five years.
- Dr. Ruth Patrick Excellence in Education
Award - open to all individuals or organizations who have
strived to educate and inform people of the water resources of
the Delaware River Basin.
- Lifetime Achievement Award- for an individual whose service through his lifetime and career has advanced the cause of sound water resources management. This award may not be given every year.
SUBMITTALS
Please type each submission nominating a candidate for one or more
of the awards listed above on a separate sheet of paper. You may nominate
yourself, your company, or another firm or individual. Please include
all appropriate background information listed below for each entry
submitted.
